Our favorite homemade BBQ sauce recipe is authentic Texas style.

Thick.

Glossy.

Bold!

In Texas, great barbecue sauces are the secret to award winning food.

Step back in time with me, for a moment . . .

. . . Imagine an old southwest cattle drive, a team of oxen hitched to a chuck wagon, and the sun beating down on “Cookie”, the original pit master, who swipes sweat from his brow with the back of his sleeve as he stirs a pot of beans over red hot hot coals.

No rotisserie or spit-barbecue for him.

He was the original outdoor cook and creator of some of the best barbecued foods in the country.

“Cookie” turned out satisfying grub busting with bodacious flavors.

Trail tested.

Cow puncher approved.

Fast forward to current day . . .

. . . Like “Cookie”, you don’t need a charcoal or gas-fired grill to enjoy the smoky flavor of an outdoor BBQ pit-style cookout.

Whip up a batch of the quick and easy gluten-free homemade BBQ sauce recipe for next meal.

Apply this exceptional brush-on to impart traditional slow cooked flavor and you will realize a cooking success that will make you look like a grilling expert.

This handy no-cook homemade BBQ sauce recipe is so delicious it will become your favorite go-to sauce.

A Hardy Sauce Requires Strong Flavors

Using molasses as the sweetener of choice in this sauce increases the nutritive value of the tomato base, while adding a robust depth of flavor difficult to capture with other sweeteners.

Depth of flavor is an important attribute in a great sauce.

In barbecue sauces, depth of flavor is created not only with the choice of sweeteners, but also with flavor enhancers, for example gluten-free soy sauce or Worcestershire sauce, and onion and/or garlic.

The hallmark of a good barbecue sauce is the tart note produced by vinegar and mustard ingredients to balance sweetness, along with the “bite” created from the addition of hot spices, such as peppers and chilies.

Because of the kinds of ingredients composing the mixture, this is a sauce that gets even better with age.

Change-up Flavor Nuances

Become a Connoisseur of Fine Foods

Experiment with different ingredients.

Slight changes to flavor can be made with different versions of the same base ingredients, such as sweeteners, vinegars, mustards and flavor enhancers.

Add Some Spice to Your Life

Spice up your barbecue sauce by adding cinnamon, allspice, nutmeg or cloves, or include all these warm spices at the same time.

Freshen Up

Use chopped grilled onions, roasted garlic, bloomed fresh grated spices, sautéed herbs, peppers and chilies from the garden.

Turn Up the Heat

Replace the hot pepper sauce with jalapeno, chipotle or habanero sauces and add more than the recipe calls for.

Leave a bottle on the table for family and guests to customize their own flavor and heat.

Consider increasing the chili powder and add ground cayenne or smoked Paprika.

Travel South-of-the-Border

Go Mexican.

Replace the vinegar with lime juice and add plenty of chopped fresh cilantro.

Increase chili powder and add some ground cumin.

Savor the Caribbean

Use pineapple juice instead of vinegar and replace molasses with brown sugar.

Add a pinch of allspice and a touch of naturally gluten-free dark rum.

Experience the Essence of Asia

Impart more subtle tones by using a gluten-free soy sauce or Bragg’s Liquid Aminos, instead of Worcestershire sauce.

Replace the apple cider vinegar with rice wine vinegar.

Use white sugar instead of molasses.

Add a little sesame oil, perhaps a pinch of turmeric and a sprinkle of fresh ground black pepper.

Stir in some minced fresh ginger and garlic.

How to Use this Homemade BBQ Sauce Recipe

Slather this homemade BBQ sauce recipe on foods during the last few minutes of cooking and pass some around at the supper table.

Replace ketchup with barbecue sauce as a condiment or as an ingredient in recipes, such as baked beans or meatloaf.

Use as a dipping sauce for your favorite meats and vegetables, such as kebabs or French fries.

Make it the sauce of choice for pulled meat sandwiches.

Substitute barbecue sauce for other tomato-based sauces such a pizza sauce.
