Easy Sloppy Joes Recipe--Gluten Free!

This easy sloppy joes recipe is a quick meal, perfect for busy weeknights and adventurous campouts.  The rich tangy sauce has the delicious chili flavor you’re looking for in one of America’s original comfort foods.

Double the batch and make it up ahead of time.  Then, freeze the leftovers for a heat-and-serve savory satisfaction on those days when you don’t want to cook.

Get creative and change up the flavors.

Throw in some sautéed chopped Anaheim or yellow bell peppers.

Use a different flavor of Tabasco™ sauce, such as habanero or chipotle or add a few drops of liquid smoke.

Make it gourmet by topping this sloppy joes recipe with crumbled bleu cheese, grated pepper jack or smoked Gouda.

Easy Sloppy Joes Recipe—Gluten Free


Here's a mouthwatering childhood favorite for the kid in all of us!

Prep Time: 15 minutes
Cook Time: 25 minutes
Yield: 4 servings

Ingredients:
- 1 pound ground beef, 85% lean
- 1 large onion, chopped
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- 3 teaspoons gluten-free chili powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon ground cumin
- 1/4 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1 1/2 cups gluten-free ketchup
- 2 teaspoons Tabasco™ Jalapeño Sauce
- 1 teaspoon gluten-free Worcestershire sauce
- 2 cups grated mozzarella or cheddar cheese
- gluten-free hamburger buns, split open and toasted

Instructions:
1. In a large skillet over medium high heat, cook ground beef and 1 cup chopped onion (set aside the rest for later) until meat is browned.
2. drain fat from meat mixture, and then return to the skillet.
3. Over medium heat, add garlic and cook for 30 seconds.
4. Add chili powder, salt, cumin and oregano, and then cook for 30 seconds.
5. Stir in ketchup, Tabasco™ Jalapeño Sauce and Worcestershire sauce, scraping bits from bottom of pan and cook until sloppy joes mixture is heated through.
6. Scoop a generous portion of hot sloppy joes mixture onto a toasted hamburger bun half.
7. Top with grated cheese, chopped onion and crown the creation with the other toasted hamburger bun half.
8. Serve immediately.

Metric Measurements

  • 15 ml gluten-free chili powder
  • 5 ml salt
  • 5 ml ground cumin
  • 1.25 ml dried oregano
  • 375 ml gluten-free ketchup
  • 10 ml Tabasco™ Jalapeño Sauce
  • 5 ml gluten-free Worcestershire sauce
  • 500 ml grated mozzarella or cheddar cheese
  • gluten-free hamburger buns, split open and toasted

Instructions

Microwave Magic

  1. In a large microwave safe casserole dish, crumble ground beef and add 1 cup chopped onion.
  2. Cook in microwave oven on full power for 3 to 4 minutes.
  3. Drain fat from meat mixture and return to casserole dish.
  4. Into meat mixture, stir in garlic, chili powder, salt, cumin, oregano, ketchup, Tabasco™ Jalapeño Sauce and Worcestershire sauce.
  5. Cook on full power for 3 to 4 minutes.
  6. Scoop a generous portion of hot sloppy joes mixture onto a toasted hamburger bun half.
  7. Top with grated cheese, chopped onion and crown the creation with the other toasted hamburger bun half.
  8. Serve immediately.


Slow Cookery

  1. In a large skillet over medium high heat, cook ground beef and 1 cup chopped onion (set aside the rest for later) until meat is browned.
  2. Drain fat from meat mixture.
  3. In the slow cooker, combine meat mixture, garlic, chili powder, salt, cumin, oregano, ketchup, Tabasco™ Jalapeño Sauce and Worcestershire sauce.
  4. Cover and cook on low for 1 to 2 hours. 
  5. Scoop a generous portion of hot sloppy joes mixture onto a toasted hamburger bun half.
  6. Top with grated cheese, chopped onion and crown the creation with the other toasted hamburger bun half.
  7. Serve immediately.
